A non-linear viscoelastic viscoplastic model for the behaviour of polyester fibres ArchiMer
Chailleux, Emmanuel; Davies, Peter.
In this study the macroscopic analysis proposed by Schapery has been applied to model the non-linear viscoelastic and viscoplastic behaviour of polyester fibres. First, a special non-contact extensometry method has been developed in order to measure the fibre response without affecting the behaviour of these extremely anisotropic fibres. An accelerated identification method has then been developed. This enables a unique and independent set of parameters to be determined, which separate the reversible and non-reversible mechanisms responsible for measured strains. The model prediction for an arbitrary loading sequence corresponds closely to the measured strains. The model has been applied here at the yarn level but can equally well be used to predict rope...

Annual production of grass silage for biogas: effects of fibrolytic enzyme additives on ensilage efficiency and specific methane yields CIGR Journal
Nolan, Pearl; Doyle, Evelyn; O'Kiley, Padraig.
The aims of this study were to quantify the effects of fibrolytic enzyme additives applied to each of four consecutive cuts of unwilted grass at ensiling on ensilage characteristics and specific CH4 yields (SMY) per unit mass and per unit land area. In light of the importance of the primary growth yield, the effects of the timing of Cut 1 were also investigated. Furthermore, the mass-SMY and area-SMY effect of any effluent produced during ensilage was determined. At each of four cuts that comprised annual growth, samples from four replicate plots of Lolium perenne and of Phleum pratense were untreated (control) or were treated with either of two fibrolytic enzymes (ENZ 1 and ENZ 2) prior to ensiling for 120 days. The mass-SMY of silages and effluents were...

Chalcogenide Glass Optical Waveguides for Infrared Biosensing ArchiMer
Anne, Marie-laure; Keirsse, Julie; Nazabal, Virginie; Hyodo, Koji; Inoue, Satoru; Boussard-pledel, Catherine; Lhermite, Herve; Charrier, Joel; Yanakata, Kiyoyuki; Loreal, Olivier; Le Person, Jenny; Colas, Florent; Compere, Chantal; Bureau, Bruno.
Due to the remarkable properties of chalcogenide (Chg) glasses, Chg optical waveguides should play a significant role in the development of optical biosensors. This paper describes the fabrication and properties of chalcogenide fibres and planar waveguides. Using optical fibre transparent in the mid-infrared spectral range we have developed a biosensor that can collect information on whole metabolism alterations, rapidly and in situ. Thanks to this sensor it is possible to collect infrared spectra by remote spectroscopy, by simple contact with the sample. In this way, we tried to determine spectral modifications due, on the one hand, to cerebral metabolism alterations caused by a transient focal ischemia in the rat brain and, in the other hand, starvation...

Comportement mécanique de fibres et d'assemblages de fibres en polyester pour câbles d'amarrage de plates-formes offshore ArchiMer
Lechat, Céline.
Faced with the need to exploit off-shore oil fields at ever increasing depths, lighter replacements are being considered for the standard steel cable mooring systems used for platforms. This study considers the mechanical behaviour of synthetic ropes made of two different materials: PET and PEN. The first is already used in ropes to replace steel, and the second could be a potential competitor. A multi-scale study, involving mechanical tests (mainly tensile, creep and cyclic loading) has been carried out on assemblies of various sizes, from ropes of several hundreds kN breaking load to their smallest components: filaments. Strong correlations were found between the quasi-static behaviour of assemblies and the behaviour of filaments, which in itself is...

Durabilité des géotextiles aramides en milieu alcalin ArchiMer
Derombise, Guillaume; Van Schoors, Laetitia; Davies, Peter.
Because of their high initial properties, aramid geotextiles have been used for a decade for ground reinforcement. Today, the geotextiles manufacturers think about their use in alkaline grounds. However there are few data on the long-term behaviour of aramid fibres under these conditions. Consequently, a durability study in a basic environment has been carried out in order to improve understanding of the degradation mechanisms involved in ageing. On that purpose, the physico-chemical characteristics as well as the surface state and the mechanical properties of the Twaron 1000 fibres have been followed at different ageing times.

HYDRATED CHIA SEED EFFECT ON WHEAT FLOUR AND BREAD TECHNOLOGICAL QUALITY CIGR Journal
Svec, Ivan.
Commercial wheat flour was blended with hydrated white and brown chia seeds. Changes in chemical composition was described by common analytical proves, and rheological properties of non-fermented as well as leavened dough was completely evaluated (by extensigraph and maturograph, respectively). Leavened bread and biscuits were prepared in a laboratory scale. Both chia type softly increased protein content and reversely their quality. Due to low amounts added, changes in dough viscoelastic properties were small. Consumer quality worsening of both tested products was also of low significance, but fibre content was increased about 50% compared to control.

Influence of water on the short and long term mechanical behaviour of polyamide 6 (nylon) fibres and yarns ArchiMer
Humeau, Corentin; Davies, Peter; Le Gac, Pierre Yves; Jacquemin, Frédéric.
Polyamide fibres are known to be sensitive to water, and this has limited their marine applications. However, their low stiffness and high strength could be attractive for shallow water mooring line ropes, particularly for floating wind turbines. Such applications require the influence of water on mechanical behaviour to be fully understood, and this paper presents results describing how water affects static and creep response of polyamide 6 fibre yarns. First, the effect of water on fibre Tg is quantified, then tensile behaviour is examined. Finally, a model based on Schapery’s non-linear creep analysis is identified for different humidity conditions. The results show that while moisture has a small effect on short-term tensile behaviour, long term...

Simulation of tensile tests of hemp fibre using discrete element method CIGR Journal
Chen, Ying; Sadek, Mohammad A.; Guzman, Leno; Lague, Claude; Landry, Hubert.
Abstract: Tensile strength is an important property of hemp fibre, because it determines the mechanical strength of fibre-based products such as biocomposites.  Commercial discrete element software, Particle Flow Code in Three Dimensions (PFC3D), was used to develop a numerical model which simulates tensile tests of hemp fibre.  The model can predict the tensile properties (such as strength and elongation) of a hemp fibre. In the model, a virtual hemp fibre was defined as a string of spherical balls, held together by cylindrical bonds implemented in PFC3D.  To calibrate the model, tensile data was collected for both unretted and retted hemp fibres using a commercial Instron testing system.  The average fibre diameter was 0.34 mm for the unretted fibre and...

Structure and properties of fibres from sea-grass (Zostera marina) ArchiMer
Davies, Peter; Morvan, C; Sire, O; Baley, C.
This paper presents results from a study of fibres extracted from Zostera marina eel-grass collected from the Baltic coast. This species of sea-grass is shown to contain small diameter (around 5 mu m) fibres composed of similar to 57% cellulose, similar to 38% of non-cellulosic polysaccharides (mainly xylan) and similar to 5% of residual matter so-called Klason lignin. This composition is quite different to that of commonly used terrestrial fibres. Single fibre stiffness values up to 28 GPa were measured. This stiffness combined with a low density could provide an attractive reinforcement for composite materials, and may be particularly suitable for use in bio-degradable structures.
